The Event

Since 1992, crowds have descended on Glen Innes in New England High Country. They come for the Australian Celtic Festival. They are attracted by the unique Celtic experience, the opportunity to meet with friends and to enjoy famous country hospitality.

The four-day Festival attracts clans, cultural groups, dancers and performers from around the world. Entertainment includes a street parade, kirking of the tartan, massed pipe bands, yard dog trials, children’s entertainment, a fun run, dancing, flag raising ceremonies, poet breakfasts, market stalls and Celtic foods.

Each year’s Festival celebrates one of the Celtic nations.

Focal point for the Festival is the dramatic setting of the Australian Standing Stones.

There are also many public and private events in the city centre – at the historic Glen Innes Town Hall, the Services Club, in halls and on the streets of town.

The Australian Standing Stones

The Australian Standing Stones are an array of granite monoliths on a hill on the eastern edge of town. You definitely don’t want to miss rising at dawn to experience the haunting skirl of pipes amidst the stones which are often shrouded in autumn mists.

Town Hall

In the main street of Glen Innes, the 1887 Town Hall is an imposing Italianate Victorian building. If you happen to be in town at noon on Fridays, a piper plays from the parapet. The beautifully restored hall is the venue for many Celtic Festival activities, and one of many heritage listed buildings in the centre of town (best observed on a heritage walk).

Grey Street

The wide main street of Glen Innes is the setting for the opening ceremony, the parade and the performances by the massed piped bands. The heritage facades of Grey Street buildings are a picturesque backdrop to the Festival’s activities.

Glen Innes Services Club

Both free and ticketed performances take place in the Glen Innes & District Services Club on Grey Street. This includes the annual Australian Celtic Music Awards ceremony. Full details are provided in each year’s program.

Around Town

The whole town embraces the Celtic spirit with performances in many venues. These are listed in the online program as details become available.
